Canker sores are annoying and painful ulcers that tend to grow on your tongue or on the inside of your lip or cheek. If you currently have a canker sore, you know that it can make speaking and talking difficult throughout the day. To help you understand the ulcer a little more and to give you ideas on how to dull your discomfort, our Greenwood Dental & Orthodontics team is happy to give you the following information:

What are the causes?
The causes of canker sores are unknown, but do they tend to form when you:

· Are stressed or tired
· Accidentally bite or damage your lip
· Have braces
· Eat foods you are allergic to
· Do not get enough vitamins or minerals in your diet
· Consume a product that has a lot of acid
· Have your menstrual cycle

What are the treatments?
The treatments for canker sores vary. Typically, the sore should disappear within a couple of days, but sometimes waiting is the toughest part. So, to treat the sore, you can use antimicrobial mouthwash, corticosteroid ointment, or a prescription or over-the-counter medication or solution. To help reduce the pain, stay away from hot and spicy foods, foods with sharp edges, and acidic foods and drinks.
